INSTRUCTIONAL NOTE: While all serves are hit with arc (unless you are nearly 7 feet tall), the upwards angle of the racquet at contact is subtle. While practicing your serve, feel the wrist flexing upwards towards the ball. This upwards swing is the primary source of racquet head speed, and by making subtle adjustments in wrist flexion, the precise angle of the racquet head at contact is determined and can be adjusted. In practical terms, the more open the racquet face at contact, the more ball arc is created that can send the ball too far. Likewise, if you serve a ball into the net, you will want to hit with more arc to get the net clearance needed to put the serve in the box. To do this, think "hit more upwards" and you should be able to contact the ball with a more open racquet face angle.
